First week of school

It's been an interesting week of this non-traditional style of schooling. I am playing catch up with my Intro to Law class because my book was not ready for pick up until late Thursday afternoon, and I picked it up on Friday. I was able to read through most of the first chapter which was the required reading for the first week, but nothing has been loaded into Canvas for that class yet, so I am just trying to follow the syllabus we received.

I am enjoying the style of learning for the IS101-3022 class because it is kind of self-paced. When I took a similar course many moons ago, I remember feeling bored because I spent much of the class just staring at the screen waiting for the next set of instructions. At least with this way of learning, when I've completed my tasks I can move on or be done for the day. I think it's been over a decade since I have actually used Microsoft Word, and I'm somewhat amazed with some of the functions it has now. I never felt that I was out of touch with technology - I am pretty confident in my ability to navigate and figure out most programs or websites, but I guess when you don't use things their enhanced features/functions become irrelevant.

  1. I'm pleased to hear the style of learning in my class works well for you and it fends off boredom :-)

  2. Who is your law 101 professor and what book are you reading? My professor is Gary Pulliam and unfortunately it took him a while to figure out how to upload stuff onto canvas. I'm really enjoying how our IS101 class is self paced. I don't feel like such an old lady when I can figure out the modules.

    1. I have the same professor :) I still do not see anything loaded into canvas for his class, but he has sent out e-mails with outlines and power point attachments.

  3. Me too, I love the fact that I can push ahead and work at my own pace. My job requires a minimum of 50 hrs per week, so its nice to be able to get ahead when I have time off rather than waiting for the next class.

  4. Like you and many of our classmates, I, too, find that self-paced courses are one of the best styles of formatting a class. I can progress at my own pace, without the restriction of deadlines stressing and rushing me to complete work that is not to the best of my ability, simply because of the due-date. It gives me immense pride to know I am ahead of schedule in my assignments (I will never understand why some professors choose to unlock their modules weekly... seriously... what's the reasoning and logic behind that?)

  5. I agree with you. This class is self paced which is the best style of learning in my opinion. It allows me to tackle other tasks I need to get done.

  6. The self paced style is absolutely wonderful. Whenever I get some free time it is always nice to get ahead.

  8. I have literally used Word pretty much every other day in my academic career and on so many occasions in my work and I still keep being shocked by my lack of knowledge at all the program's functions haha! So you're definitely not alone in feeling suddenly technologically out of pace. That's great that you find the pace of this course refreshing though, I'm sure you'll be sure to succeed this semester!

  9. I find the self paced style of this class to be very helpful during this time since I've been really busy juggling work and family business. Also, I never realized how much I've overlooked a ton of the functions on Microsoft Word. It made me a little upset realizing that the teachers could've went over a lot of these functions to save me a ton of time and corrections on my essays. MLA format has never felt like such a breeze to set up after finishing the Word lessons.

  10. I do like the fact that we don't have to leave our house to go to school too. Even though I already took a Microsoft class, but I still loose and forget things. But professor is very helpful.
